In the last few weeks I have been re-reading some of the books that I had either disliked immensly or had not understood.
My intention is to check if my prespective has changed with time and with hopefully more maturity. One book which was all rage in college was Rich Dad Poor Dad. I had strong negative opinion of the book.

A month back kittu da mentioned it so I was having a relook at it. Somehow I think this book makes some sense now.

Other book which I am reading is - Road less travelled. Another book that I read when I was in first year college. Probably too young to understand the context
of the book. I find the book has lots of things to teach.

Which Khusboo wala rubber was better - we never got around to call it a Eraser

Becoming Vegetarian

Some changes .... in my life that have happened is that I have become a vegetarian since last 2 months.

Not really surely of why but some of the reasons are that I was fed of seeing meat in almost all food content here in the super-stores and our food-canteen and eating it almost everyday. in some form or the other.

(Living with 2 vegetarian room-mates in Chennai for 2 years had aleady lowered my appetite for meat)

Plus the usual Religious/Spiritual/Moral/Health arguments.

Lets see how long this continues but I am taking one day at a time.

This is a great page with loads of anti-establishment types of documentary. If u have some patience and more importantly some band-width then you must watch the documentaty - The Corporation. It is quite a brialliant piece of critisicism of the gloabal corporations. Even Economist had to admit the following -

"Unlike much of the soggy thinking peddled by too many anti-globalisers, 'The Corporation' is a surprisingly rational and coherent attack on capitalism's most important institution."

I think instead of having those meaningless discussion in the ethics course at MBA's it would be better if students were to see this doumentary and then voice their opinion

They bolster their argument with the specious reasoning that it is harder to gain admission into IITs than into Ivy league schools, and that Narayana Murthy’s son had to use an Ivy league school as a safety school.

Sure it is harder to get into the IITs than into the top American schools. That does not mean that the IITs are in any way better than those American schools. It is a Herculean task to get into a Mumbai local during commute hours, compared to which using the Paris Metro is a piece of cake. Congestion is not an indicator of quality. When supply is severely limited relative to demand, there will be a mad scramble to get some.

On average, fewer than two out of every one hundred who appear for the entrance exam for IITs get admission. If you were to choose the top two percent of any population, the average quality of that group will be a few sigmas higher than the population average. The IITs turn out good students because those who get in are good to begin with. Then for four years, these way-above average kids compete fiercely among themselves for grades. Finally, from this bunch of super-achievers, those with the highest grades and potential are snapped up by the best American universities. By the time these graduate out of the American universities, they are the crème de la crème who have self-selected themselves for intelligence, drive, ambition, and vision. Reminds me of my 'American Literature' profressor, 'Mack P' at iit. He has spent a number of yrs in US - phD & teaching and had returned to India. his trade mark dress - khaddar and chappals. He used to say there are 2 kinds of indians in US - one who change their accent within 2 weeks of landing there and others who become even more traditionists than Indians living in India.

I landed in London on 25th of Jan and went home late night tired. Wanted to get to bed so that the next day I could go to work in time. I was amazed to see that all my friends were wide awake. Reason - all of them had taken the following day off. 'We have made it a rule that we do not work on 26th Jan & 15th Aug' They had been following this since last 3 years.
All laughed at me for going to work on 26th Jan.

Now thats being patriotic.

Incidentially, I had a better Diwali in London as compared to chennai.

Had a serious discussion with path today morning, with me eating the leftover khichdi from last night ( after a long time cooked my favourite food khichdi for dinner yesterday)

Parth says that I am the most non-materialisitc person he has seen in his life. That I can live on anything, stay anywhere and have almost no requirements in life.. (except roti, kapda makkan and bandwidth) and have got nothing to do with Branded stuff.. example of buying both my non-branded shoes from Asda rather than from nike, rebook etc etc.

I am still reflecting on this..

What he says is probably correct - I dont aspire to own a big house, have no fascination for cars or mobile handsets and certainly dont want a plasma tv.
not that i have anything against anyne who aspires these things

now let me list down the things that I cannot live without -

1-Tea (prefreably TajMahal and strong)
2-Bike - cant imagin not roaming around generally on a bike (one thing that i miss in london)
3-gmail and blogspot ;o)
4- mobile phone - need to talk to my friends for an hour
5- books - loads of them

I would say lack of courage has been the main issue. Thinking back I can count lots of instances when I could have changed my life or I know exactly what I wanted but never had the courage to take the leap for it. Even though I tend to think of myself as non-conventional person with some weird notions of life and society my resume reads like a strictly career orineted ambitious person who will fit the role of the new yankee youth of India.

1 - Was clear from school days that I do not want to be a enginner, yet worked hard to get into a engg college and then for the next 4 years kept on exploring what next.

1.1 - Wanted to take up economics at Stephen's yet took admission in Physics again from a plain practical consideration.

2 - Was clear that software jobs are crappy and I do not want to waste my life sitting in front of a computer, yet took the software job, strictly because of the money it offered as compared to the other jobs in NGO's that I was thinking about

3 - Took a posting in Pune as compared to Bombay because thought of Joining FTII pune after 2 years. (wanted to become a cinematographer) Could never quit my job for it

4 - Did not want to spend a fortune in doing a MBA yet did it out of some vague considerations at that point of time and landed up in a high-end call-center ;o)

The only case when I jumped was for the start-up ProductDossier to fulfill the desire of being a part of a start-up and get a entreprenurial flavour

Inspite of all this I still have hope that someday I will be able to do what I really want. Question is that even if I have figured it out, will I have the courage to jump the ship.
